Ventricular Wall Motion and Myocardial Ischemia

This is Dr. Cal Shipley with a review of wall motion of the left ventricle of the heart.

Of the four chambers of the human heart, the left ventricle performs the lion’s share of the work, circulating blood via the aorta to all the organs and tissues of the body.

Analysis of movement of the wall of the left ventricle, as in nuclear wall motion studies, can determine the presence of heart disease. In the absence of significant obstruction to blood flow through the coronary arteries, left ventricular wall motion will appear normal during the exercise portion of the study. The impairment in left ventricle wall motion will be particularly apparent during periods of exercise as depicted here.
